Working with Families in Asia - an exercise in mediation

Wealth Management in Asia - The Future is Now, The STEP Asia Conference 2012, Hong Kong, 15 - 17 October 2012
Working with Families in Asia - an exercise in mediation
Dr Helena Yuen and I debated whether the cultural assumptions that underlie the interest based model of mediation most frequently taught translate well to an Asian context.

Our broad conclusion was that the model does indeed work well in Asia, albeit that the language - particularly the metaphors - that we use to explain the process and the role of both mediators and stakeholders, and indeed to explore the nature of the conflict and its impact on those involved, needs to be adapted to suit the local cultural and linguistic context.

Dr Helena Yuen is a solicitor and mediator and is the Director and Founding Chairperson of the Conflict Resolution Centre in Hong Kong.
